Frequently asked questions

Pilates is a low-impact exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates that focuses on core strength, flexibility, postural alignment, and muscle control, using controlled, precise movements and breath work to strengthen the entire body. It can be performed on a mat or with specialised equipment such as the reformer, Wunda chair or spring board.

There are varying approaches, or styles, within the Pilates industry that can be valid and relevant to every body. Take the time to try different studios and approaches to find the one that works for you.

Ensure your instructor holds full membership with the Pilates Association of Australia (PAA) and that the studio is registered studio with the PAA, this ensures the studio and its instructors have met the following criteria:

  • Graduated from a PAA recognised training organisation.

  • Undertakes ongoing professional development education to ensure currency and standard of knowledge.

  • Holds current first aid certificate as well as professional insurance and indemnity.

  • They pledge to undertake professional conduct in line with the PAA Code of Practice.

The Pilates studio offers different levels of classes to cater for both new and experienced participants and provides appropriate instructor to client ratio to ensure all clients are observed and assisted adequately.

The studio should request an assessment with all new clients to establish any health and/or physical impediments to ensure the safety of the participant.

All classes should be 45-50 minutes in duration (unless otherwise stated).

I received my mat and reformer instructor certificate from The Pilates Pro Academy in January 2026. I will begin my Pilates diploma with Polestar Pilates Australia late 2026 who provide courses that are Australian Government accredited and approved by peak industry bodies the Pilates Association Australia (PAA), AUSactive and ESSA.

Yoga aims to use meditation to attain spiritual insight and tranquillity, with a focus on flexibility and mobility.

Pilates focuses on the development of core control, stability and the creation of dynamic, functional total body movement, developing postural strength and endurance as well as mobility and flexibility.

Both forms of exercise are beneficial to health and well-being.

Wearing socks in a Pilates studio is a very common request - grip socks especially are helpful for finding grip on the floor, your mat, or on the reformer footbar or carriage.

Socks also help with hygiene by keeping natural body oils from building up on equipment, apparatus and the studio floor. Some feet can also be a bit grubby (no shade, we are all living in the same environment) which can leave marks on the floor, mats and/or equipment, so wearing socks helps to make the Lightform experience fresh and clean for everyone who comes into the space and uses the equipment.

Lightform Pilates will never offer large group classes. The reason for small class sizes is to provide instruction to clients that is more personal and focused than you would receive in a class of 10 or more.

My intention is to invest in more reformers and more specialised studio equipment and apparatus to allow for more people than currently allows, and to be able to offer a larger range of services within private and semi-private sessions. My ideal studio will accommodate 4 people in reformer group classes, 3 people in spring board group classes and up to 6 people in mat group classes - there is no time frame on this growth, it will be as finances allow.

At this stage of building my new business, I am not offering a seniors discount, or any discounts other than what is available through purchasing a package.

Once I am confident in my new business and have enough in my 'cup' to give back to my community (in addition to the charities Lightform already supports), senior-specific classes and discounts will be considered.

I understand this may cause disappointment, but it is not my intention to copy what other exercise instructors, studios or gyms offer.

Not at this stage, but may be considered in the future.

You are more than welcome to bring your well-behaved child to sit in the waiting area with their own quiet entertainment for the duration of your session. I love having kids come in to the studio to be exposed to the magic of Pilates, but classes for children are not planned to be included on the schedule in the near future.

Child minding is not a service offered. The Lightform studio is small (it's just me) so if you bring your child, you will be responsible for them throughout your session to ensure their safety around the equipment and that other clients are not disturbed.

How independent businesses choose to set their pricing is their prerogative. If you feel a service is over-priced, you don't have to engage it.

Comparing prices for exact services is logical, but comparing an apple to an orange is not. Please be aware that questioning the pricing of a small business (especially one that is trying to get off the ground) and/or comparing them to another person or service with different qualifications, does not offer the same comfortable studio environment and has not invested in professional equipment and apparatus, can be very insulting and cause more anxiety and self-doubt than you realise.

I am incredibly flattered when someone wants to engage my services, but if you feel I am under-qualified and/or over-priced, you are welcome to visit another instructor, studio or gym that better fits your budget and expectations.

It is not my intention to copy programs, class types, offer discounts or copy/paste what other studios, gyms or fitness instructors are offering. I am building a business that promotes confidence, strength and independence in all of my clients, and it is with these intentions in mind that I have set my prices to what I believe my services are worth.

If the $5 class is a private session, in a comfortable air-conditioned space, making use of professional Pilates equipment and apparatus, I am absolutely open to re-evaluate my pricing structure.

If the $5 class is a large group, held in a park or public space, or offered by a large business or organisation who have the capacity to offer these affordable options within a broader schedule, it is not a logical comparison.

No, you are welcome to pay cash per class or purchase a package (with cash) then use the package credits to book your classes. If you would prefer to pay cash, you will still need to book through the website or app.
